In April and May of 2018, Nicaraguans gathered in record numbers to protest against their government. Violence resulted, and at least 109 people were killed. The violence culminated during la Marcha de las Madres on May 30, 2018, when eight people died. Two years after this historic march—SITU Research, in collaboration with EAAF and GIEI, released a detailed event reconstruction that sheds light on the deaths of three protesters that day.
The event reconstruction was released as part of a virtual memorial event organized by AMA (Mothers of April Association) to commemorate the civilians who lost their lives during the Marcha de las Madres. In addition to premiering the video, the memorial included reflections from from the victims’ family members and remarks from SITU Research, EAAF and Amerigo Incalcaterra, Sofía Macher, Pablo Parenti and y Claudia Paz y Paz Bailey—four members of GIEI- Nicaragua.
The video has since been shared across Latin America and received press coverage by numerous news outlets in the region, including El País, Proceso, Infobae América, Telam, Crónica and BBC Mundo.
