919 3rd Ave Cladding

The cladding at 919 3rd Avenue is a striking intervention designed by Studios Architecture for real estate developer, SL Greene.

The primary goal of the project was to create an engaging and visually appealing screen for a security station, transforming it into a sculptural monument that adds interest to the surrounding plaza. SITU fabricated and installed seventy-two 2’ x 4’ solid surface panels each with undulating geometries creating wavelike movement across the surface of the previously unremarkable structure.

The geometry of the solid surface panels fell into six distinct typologies allowing our team to achieve the desired movement across the structure’s exterior while providing cost savings on design and fabrication by making certain patterns repeatable. Via a mockup phase early in the project, we were able to explore material performance to determine that solid surface would enable us to not only create the forms as designed but would also hold up to an exterior application and allow for easier upkeep and repair.

To fabricate each panel, we created specialized molds upon which we thermoformed the solid surface and then trimmed and detailed the panels utilizing our CNC router. Custom bracket attachments were then developed which allowed for easier installation on the aluminum and steel substructure.

Throughout the process, effective coordination between our team, the designer and the general contractor was an essential element in realizing the project goals and creating a unique and dynamic façade.
