"A life-size environment for exploring architectural ideas in public, the pavilion is the architectural equivalent of the concept car. Yet unlike concept cars, which often generate headlines, pavilions seldom get much attention outside of specialized contexts like the Venice Architecture Biennale. A new exhibition at San Francisco's Museum of Craft and Design makes a strong case for the pavilion's importance, and may even help to bring more attention to the pavilion-building practice.
The exhibit includes pavilions and related artifacts from eight architecture studios. For instance, LA-based Warren Techentin Architecture applies the structural logic of yurts to modern industrial materials. And Brooklyn's SITU Studio addresses the challenge of making architecture adaptable to changing requirements, showing a system of interlocking plywood struts that are mutually reinforcing in myriad configurations such that users can spontaneously shape entire buildings to suit their needs."
